Abstract : The moisture resistance of optical fiber coating is an important guarantee for the protection of optical fiber. In this paper, the water vapor transmission rate of a certain coating of optical fiber was tested by the cup method principle, and the test principle and equipment were described. Parameters, scope of application, testing process, etc. provide references for the effective evaluation of moisture resistance of coating materials.

1 , the meaning
The optical fiber is made of glass or plastic and is a good optical conductor. It is a common signal transmission medium. For most optical fibers, they cannot be used alone. They need to be protected with a few coat layers on the outer layer to prevent external environmental factors from destroying the optical fibers. Water is one of the unfavorable factors that can cause damage to optical fibers. Moist air will Hydrolysis and stress corrosion occur at the surface of micro-cracks and abrasions on the surface of the optical fiber, causing fatigue fracture of the optical fiber. 2 , test sample
In this test, an optical fiber coating made of a plastic polymer material was used as a test sample to test its moisture resistance.
3 , test basis
The test methods for water vapor transmission rate of plastic film and sheet materials include cup method, infrared sensor method, electrolytic sensor method, and humidity sensor method. In this paper, the water vapor transmission rate is tested by the cup method. The standard is GB 1037-1988 "Plastic film and sheet permeable vapor test method cup method".
4 , test equipment
The test equipment adopted in this paper is the W3/030 water vapor transmission rate tester, which is independently developed by Jinan Languang Electromechanical Technology Co., Ltd.

4.1 Test principle
The principle of the cup method is to test the water vapor transmission rate of the sample according to the change of the quality of the moisture permeable cup. The principle includes weight gain method and weight loss method. The weight gain method is a desiccant contained in a moisture permeable cup, and the weight loss method includes a distilled water in a moisture permeable cup, and the sample is sealed on a moisture permeable cup. The internal conditions of the equipment are controlled so that the outside of the weight gain method moisture permeable cup is in a high humidity environment, and the outside of the weight loss method moisture permeable cup is in a low humidity environment. On both sides of the sample are different humidity conditions, and the water vapor passes through the high humidity side. If the sample penetrates into the low-humidity side, the quality of the moisture-permeable cup will increase ( weight gain method ) or decrease ( weight loss method ) . According to the change of the quality of the permeation moisture cup, the water vapor transmission rate of the sample can be obtained. .
4.2 Scope of application
(1) This equipment is suitable for testing the water vapor transmission rate of packaging materials and products such as films, sheets, paper and board, textiles and non-woven fabrics. Among them, films include various plastic films, paper-plastic composite films, geomembranes, co-extruded films, waterproof breathable films, aluminized films, aluminum foils, aluminum-plastic composite films and other film-like materials; sheet materials including various engineering plastics, Rubber, building materials ( building waterproof materials ) , insulation materials, such as PP , PVC , PVDC , nylon and other sheets.

4.3 Equipment Parameters

(1) Use a sampler to cut three specimens of 74 mm in diameter from the surface of the coated sample of the optical fiber to be tested .
(2) A certain amount of distilled water was added to the water vapor permeable cup. According to the sealing method, the cut three pieces of the sample were sealed in three moisture permeable cups, respectively.
(3) Place three moisture-permeable cups on the moisture-permeable cup holder inside the device and close the test chamber door.
(4) Set parameters such as sample name, thickness, test mode, weighing interval, test temperature, test humidity, etc. on the control software of the device. Click to start the test option and start the test. The equipment automatically controls the test conditions according to the set parameters and performs intermittent weighing. After the test is completed, the test results are calculated and displayed according to the weighing conditions.
6 , the result
The test results of the three samples tested were 53.6741 g/(m2·24h) , 55.0105 g/(m2·24h) , 56.7528 g/(m2·24h) , and the water vapor of the sample fiber coating film. The transmission rate is the average of 55.1458 g/(m2·24h) of the three test results .
7. Conclusion
In this test, the water vapor transmission rate of the coated sample of the optical fiber was tested using the weight reduction method based on the principle of the cup method.
