STMicroelectronics partners with MediaTek to integrate market-leading NFC technology designs into mobile platforms

STMicroelectronics (ST; NYSE: STM), a leading global semiconductor supplier, has announced that its NFC contactless communications technology is integrated into MediaTek's mobile platform across multiple electronic applications to enable the development of handsets Enterprise R & D provides a complete solution for the next generation of smartphones that support highly integrated NFC mobile services.

Mobile payments are expected to grow at a three-digit rate in the next few years with the rapid growth of mobile phone credit card issuance in Asia, especially in China's major cities.

STMicroelectronics' NFC chipset and MediaTek's mobile payment platform are designed to help mobile OEMs overcome major technology challenges such as antenna design and integration, antenna miniaturization, bill of materials optimization, and the assurance that mobile phones and retail stores , Transportation hubs and other locations of mobile payment terminals interoperability.

MediaTek is the world's second-largest provider of handset solutions and the addition of STMicroelectronics will allow it to offer superior contactless communications over competing brand platforms.

Marie-France Florentin, vice president and general manager of Secure Microcontroller Products Group at STMicroelectronics, said: "STMicroelectronics will provide NFC Technologies with MediaTek technology to optimize cost and integration by reducing antenna size and component count "Vendors at STMicroelectronics have provided our customers with self-developed, robust NFC and RFID technologies over the years, and ST21NFCD is the first STMicroelectronics integrated recently market-proven amplifier technology."

About STMicroelectronics Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology:

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a key technology for non-contact communication applications such as mobile payment and is widely used in contactless payment cards and payment terminals. STMicroelectronics' NFC chip or system-in-package overcomes the technical challenges of enabling robust wireless communications over longer distances, making mobile payments easier, more reliable and more private while preventing cyber-threats such as snooping and cracking.

STMicroelectronics latest NFC system-in-package ST54F and ST54H respectively ST21NFCD NFC controller and ST33G1M2 and ST33J2M0 Embedded Security Unit (eSE) and the operating system. ST21NFCD NFC controller active load modulation method to extend the communication distance.
