Strong convective weather recognition technology development project based on comprehensive observation

[ China Instrument Network Instrument Development ] On March 22nd, the national key research and development plan “Significant Natural Disaster Monitoring, Early Warning and Prevention” key project 2018 project “Strong observation based strong convective weather identification technology and demonstration system development” was launched in Beijing.

Strong convective weather mainly refers to convective winds (≥17.2m/s) accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, short-term heavy precipitation, and is a kind of severely destructive weather, which seriously threatens people's lives and property. He must be monitored. However, due to the small horizontal scale and short life characteristics of strong convective weather, monitoring and early warning is more difficult.
To this end, the National Meteorological Center (CMA) led the Nanjing University, China Meteorological Administration Meteorological Exploration Center, Jiangsu Institute of Meteorological Sciences, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Beijing Institute of Urban Meteorology, China Ocean University, China Meteorology The Wuhan Heavy Rain Research Institute, Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, and Beijing Minstar Radar Co., Ltd. jointly undertook the implementation of the project “Strong Convective Weather Recognition Technology and Demonstration System Development Based on Integrated Observation”.
In 2018, the Ministry of Science and Technology officially approved the project, the central government's financial expenses were 21.33 million yuan, and the project implementation cycle was 37 months. On March 22, the project was officially launched in Beijing.
The project leader Zheng Yongguang, on behalf of the project team, reported on the overall implementation plan of the project and announced the establishment of a project consulting expert group. The person in charge of each project reported on the implementation plan of each topic. The project expert group will demonstrate the overall implementation plan of the project and the implementation plan of each project. The participating experts made suggestions on the problems and technical difficulties in the implementation of the project. The project R&D members attending the meeting discussed issues related to related technologies and internal management systems of the project.
In the next step, the National Meteorological Center will fully support and promote the project, further strengthen cooperation with research institutes, universities, and enterprises, absorb opinions and suggestions from consultants and guidance experts, and continue to deepen strong convective weather monitoring under the guidance of the expert group. And the research and development of early warning technology to improve the forecasting and early warning capability of strong convective weather in China.
