New oil-water separation materials are expected to contribute to water pollution control
Xinhua News Agency, Washington, June 27 (Reporter Zhou Zhou) Chinese researchers recently developed a new oil-water separation material that can quickly and efficiently separate tiny oil droplets from water and is expected to be used for industrial wastewater treatment and water purification.
According to a study published in the latest issue of the American Advanced Functional Materials magazine, the structure of the new material is similar to that of a gripper, concave oleophilic, convex surface hydrophilic, and when added to a mixture of oil and water, tiny oil droplets can be quickly separated from the water. This material is named "magnetic two-sided divine microspheres". The two-faced god is the god of heaven in Roman mythology. There is a face in front of and behind the head.
Researchers say that oil is usually present in the form of oil slicks, dispersed oils, emulsified oils, and the like. In recent years, researchers have successively developed new membrane or sponge materials for oil-water separation, but tiny oil droplets with a size of less than 20 microns are relatively stable in water, and it is difficult to separate this mixture by conventional methods.
The author of the paper, Wang Shutao, a researcher at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Xinhua News Agency reporters that the “magnetic two-sided divinity microspheres†can separate small oil droplets in water. The entire separation process takes only two minutes and the separation efficiency is as high as 99%. Suitable for different proportions, different types of oil and water mixture.
During the treatment process, firstly, the “magnetic two-sided divine microspheres†are added to the oil-water mixture. The “gripper†can effectively trap tiny droplets of oil in the water and form a snowman-like structure. In the process of violent shaking, the microspheres promote the consolidation of tiny oil droplets. The formation of large oil droplets allows the oil-water mixture to layer; while the hydrophilic and oleophilic nature of the microspheres allows the large oil droplets to remain stable. Finally, the surface oil layer can be quickly extracted from the layered oil-water mixture with a magnetic substance.
With the massive discharge of oily wastewater from industrial and daily life and the frequent occurrence of offshore crude oil leakage accidents, oil pollution in water has become a major problem that endangers human health and environmental safety. Wang Shutao said that this material provides new ideas for the development of new oil-water separation products.
