January 23, 2014, Morris, NJ-- Honeywell announced that it has signed a purchase agreement with Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. of Japan to expand the market supply of new automotive refrigerant HFO-1234yf. This refrigerant has a global warming potential (GWP) of less than 1, which is 99.9% lower than the current use of HFC-134a, and even lower than the GWP of carbon dioxide refrigerants.
Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. will produce HFO-1234yf in Japan, Honeywell will be in the United States, Europe and Asia sales of the product. According to the agreement, Japan Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. will start production in mid-2015.
Ken Gayer, Honeywell’s vice president and general manager of the fluorochemicals division, said: “The procurement agreement between Honeywell and Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. will help us meet the immediate market demand for HFO-1234yf. We are committed to solving the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and meeting the requirements of laws and regulations. We will continue to work with our customers to predict long-term market demand, and at the same time through our upcoming high-capacity new plant built in Gasma, Louisiana, USA. To meet this demand, our production bases in the United States and Asia will provide automotive customers with more reliable and more secure supply chains."
Earlier this month, Honeywell announced that the company and its major suppliers will spend US$300 million to increase HFO-1234yf's production capacity, including the establishment of a new plant for production of refrigerants at Honeywell’s existing Gesma base. The plant will adopt a new production process and will be fully operational in 2016, depending on the supply agreement of Honeywell and its major customers.
At present, some auto manufacturers use HFO-1234yf to meet the European Union's MAC requirements. This landmark legislation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air-conditioning systems for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The directive requires that all new cars listed on the European market after January 1, 2013 must have a refrigerant with a GWP of less than 150.
GWP is a relative index that measures the degree of warming caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, using carbon dioxide refrigerant as a benchmark and setting its GWP to 1. The GWP of HFO-1234yf is less than 1, meaning that its impact on the environment is even lower than that of carbon dioxide refrigerant. (For details, see the comparison table of greenhouse effect at the end of the paper)
After 2017, all vehicles sold in Europe must have refrigerants with a global warming potential below 150. HFO-1234yf with a GWP value less than 1 not only satisfies this new stringent requirement, but is even lower than 99% of the standard.
American automakers are also adopting HFO-1234yf to achieve the company's average fuel economy (CAFé) and vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards, increase the average fuel economy of vehicles, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. Since the HFO-1234yf has a very low environmental impact (the GWP value of HFO-1234yf is less than 1, and the refrigerant HFC-134a currently used has a GWP of 1300), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows car manufacturers to use HFO-1234yf. And get a grant.
Nearly 500,000 vehicles are currently using HFO-1234yf safely. It is expected that by the end of 2014, this number is expected to exceed 2 million vehicles. Third-party data show that the widespread use of HFO-1234yf reduced greenhouse gases globally is equivalent to the permanent reduction of more than 30 million vehicles on global highways, or the reduction of global total vehicle volume by about 3%.
As an efficient automotive refrigerant, HFO-1234yf's remarkable capabilities have been verified around the world and Honeywell will continue to develop a global business structure to serve its global customer base.
